New Year Post – 1926: The Introduction

1926
It was my time of life where everyone was overly satisfied with themselves and a lot dissatisfied with others. Extremely pleased with themselves and hoping to do better next year only to suddenly fall short. So we regressed. We drank. We danced. We laughed. Most importantly the girls wore feathers, the men wore no ties. The stars at twilight were the same as the stars at night. They splashed their light into the next year. Pettish women broke of friendships over one solitary human being who in the light of life-run never really gave a thought to her. Boys got into bull fights, drunk-crazy over some pretty Mayors daughter. The only thing that never changed was The God Who made them. Their lives faded into leaves of summer, it seemed that all the young people died except the close friends and all the old people died except the bitter enemies. The light of summer swirled into whiskey glasses, champagne, parties and college. Lot’s of people went to college those days. There was a somber nervousness and excitement in the air in fall. Glasses of cider were passed and all waited quietly and abstained until the peppermint brandy would be passed on Christmas day. It was a mad rush since then, preparing for the new year, businesses opening, weddings in spring, the graduates in summer! Then there was the New Year. There were balls and house parties where everyone screamed, “Happy New Year!” until their voices were hoarse. Champagne was drunk, passed incessantly and laughter was loud and long yet so small. Even in the crystal dark strangers passing under streetlamps was the subtle whisper “Happy New Year”, welcoming a new dawn. When it was time to go one guest alone took an eternity to thank the host or hostess, half-drunk, sparkling, and full of dreams. Nothing mattered. Everything was happy. So they went out as beautiful fools dancing into the starlight.
