Flight at Night, or, Dark Sky Island

flight-at-night

The yellow  full moon shone faintly through the black night sky, sparse stars twinkling across the cosmos. Hooves beat lightly against the stone pavement that led up to the designated cottage. Covered in ferns and greenery, the cottage blended easily into the night. Gaslit Lillas lined the path, casting up a welcoming but eerie glow. The black horse came to a stop in front of the villa porch. Smoke billowed from his nostrils and the Lillas cast their light upon the tall, stately horseman. Tonsoni Berrd of the Kuraji. His armor of mail and leather meshed with the darkness and his swept-back hair displayed a high brow telling of noble heritage. The tan-colored door of the villa, which a moment ago had appeared invisible, creaked open. A woman stepped out cautiously and came up to the horse and rider. The ends of her long dark locks tied around her head in braids, keeping the rest of her hair out of her face. From the folds of her pale green dress she produced a bundle. Inside the bundle was a little girl. The light from the Gaslit Lillas illuminated her pale skin and round dark eyes.

“Thank you for coming Major Berrd. Please, take the child far from this place.”

The baby began to whimper and cry as her mother gently handed her over to the Major.
